Top UFO Expert’s Final Words Spark Debate on ET Claims

Nick Pope, the former Ministry of Defence UFO investigator, has left a final, provocative interview before his death, claiming that 20% of the UFO sightings he examined remain unexplained by conventional means. His remarks, made to Bradley Walsh for a Sky History documentary, have reignited debates about extraterrestrial life and government transparency.

The Unexplained 20%

During his three years on the MoD’s “UFO desk,” Pope investigated about 1,000 sightings. He told Walsh he could explain around 80% of these cases, attributing them to weather balloons, aircraft lights, or other known phenomena. However, the remaining 20% defied conventional explanation, featuring objects with speeds, maneuvers, and accelerations beyond current aerospace capabilities. “Some of this doesn’t quite add up,” Pope said, adding that these cases prompted him to take the subject more seriously.

AI: A Double-Edged Sword for UAP Research

Pope warned that artificial intelligence, while a powerful tool, could complicate efforts to prove extraterrestrial existence. “Now with the rise of AI, you don’t really know if something is real or not,” he said. This technological advancement, he argued, could muddy the waters for researchers seeking definitive evidence of alien life or visitation.

Churchill’s 1952 UFO Inquiry

The documentary also highlights a declassified Ministry of Defence file revealing that Winston Churchill requested a report on flying saucers in 1952. This historical detail underscores the long-standing interest in UFOs at the highest levels of government, though the MoD did not respond to requests for further comment on the matter.

Debate Over Government Transparency

Pope’s claims have sparked renewed discussion about the government’s role in UFO research. He accused officials of “hiding the truth about aliens,” asserting that world leaders know more than they publicly disclose. “They know there’s more to this than just weather balloons and aircraft lights,” he said. These allegations have fueled calls for greater transparency, though no official statements have followed.

A Legacy of Inquiry

Pope, who died of cancer in April 2026, transitioned from civil service to media after the MoD’s UFO desk closed, becoming a prominent commentator on the unexplained. His final interview, filmed shortly before his death, reflects his lifelong curiosity about the universe. “The world with aliens in it is going to be far more interesting and fun than the world with no aliens,” he said. “So bring them on.”

Bradley Walsh’s documentary, *Out of This World*, is available on Sky HISTORY and HISTORY Play, with all episodes released on Tuesday.
