Shield AI buys Echodyne for $5.3B to boost drone defense

KIRKLAND, November 6, 2026 — Shield AI has agreed to acquire radar maker Echodyne in a $5.3 billion transaction, expanding its drone-warfare capabilities. The deal values Shield AI at $28.8 billion, more than double its worth in March.

Acquisition Details

Shield AI is raising $2.5 billion to fund the deal, including a $1 billion Series H led by Disruptive and Innovation X Capital. Echodyne produces solid-state radar systems using patented Metamaterials Electronically Scanned Array (MESA) technology, which can track small quadcopter drones and even over 1,000 objects at a time. The company was awarded a $250 million contract by the Defense Department’s premier national counter-drone task force, JIATF-401, in September to provide counter-drone technology to military forces over 36 months.

Technical Integration

The acquisition will integrate Echodyne’s MESA radar with Shield’s Hivemind autonomy software, enhancing the company’s ability to counter growing drone swarm threats. Under the hood, the technical reality is that Echodyne’s radars will provide superior sensing capabilities, allowing Shield’s autonomous systems to act on what they can sense. As ever, the detail that matters is the ability to detect and track drones, and Echodyne’s technology is expected to significantly improve this capability.

Strategic Shift

The acquisition marks a strategic shift for Shield AI, as it moves into dual-use markets like public safety and major events. Shield AI CEO Gary Steele said the purchase of Echodyne supports the company’s aim to branch into three different areas of unmanned systems. The company is building a new-generation defense technology company consisting of three fast-growing, high-margin, mutually supporting business units: autonomy software, autonomous systems, and mission systems.

Context and Reactions

The surge in counter-drone demand following the Ukraine and Iran wars has driven the acquisition, with Echodyne CEO Eben Frankenberg stating that demand for counter-drone detecting radar could grow tenfold by 2030. Frankenberg said Shield AI’s mission complements that of Echodyne, and he expects unity of effort to multiply what both companies can deliver. The acquisition is expected to close in early 2027, subject to regulatory approvals, with up to $500 million of the acquisition price contingent on Echodyne meeting performance targets.
