FD-302, “Dark Triangle with Lights,” 2011

An FBI interview transcript.

Washington, D.C., August 7 — The FBI released an interview transcript on August 7, 2026, detailing a 2011 encounter with an unidentified triangular object described as “dark” with recessed white lights at each corner. The document, an FBI Form FD-302, records the account of two former U.S. military personnel who reported seeing the phenomenon on an evening in June or July 2011. According to the interview, the observers were in a vehicle near their driveway around 8 or 9 PM when they noticed three lights in the sky.

The object was described as a massive black isosceles triangle, though one witness initially speculated it might have been equilateral. The lights, recessed back from the corners, emitted a diffuse glow and were accompanied by a low humming sound that pulsed rhythmically.

The object remained low to the ground, creating no contrails, and passed over a tree line within 10 to 15 seconds of observation. One witness, who referred to himself as “111111” in the document, emphasized the object’s proximity and scale. He estimated it was about 800 feet above the ground, though he acknowledged uncertainty about the vertical profile. The triangular shape was inferred from the placement of the lights and the lack of clear visibility of its sides.

Neither observer recalled seeing a distinct feature in the middle of the triangle beyond a grayish or graphite-colored mass, which may have been obscured by the object’s low altitude and limited viewing angle. The interview also notes the witnesses’ attempts to document the event.

One tried to retrieve a phone to record video, but the object had already disappeared by the time the device was obtained. The lack of a clear recording has left the account reliant on eyewitness descriptions. The FBI’s digital rendering, labeled FBI-UAP-D029, is based on these descriptions but does not provide additional verifiable details beyond the witnesses’ accounts.

The two individuals, who were not named in the document, reported that neighbors may have witnessed the event as well. They suggested that some residents in the vicinity might have come forward to share their observations or submit statements to the FBI.

However, no such statements or corroborating evidence are included in the FD-302. The document itself contains no conclusions or recommendations from the FBI, explicitly stating it is a record of the interview and not an analysis of the phenomenon. The disclosure of FD-302 as part of the FBI’s PURSUE tranche in 2026 aligns with broader efforts to catalog historical UAP reports.

The document’s technical focus—detailing specific dimensions, lighting configurations, and acoustic details—reflects the agency’s attempt to preserve raw data without interpretation. Critics have questioned the reliability of such accounts, given the absence of physical evidence or independent verification.

Proponents argue that the consistent descriptions across multiple witnesses warrant further investigation into potential anomalous phenomena.
