Pentagon Releases 2022 Report on Balloon Over Europe

The Department of War has made public a previously classified analysis from 2022 that conclusively identifies an unidentified anomalous phenomenon tracked over European airspace as a conventional balloon. The document, cataloged as PR-004, emerged through the PURSUE transparency framework and represents a joint product of the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office alongside the Office of the Secretary of Defense.

According to the declassified findings, a military aircraft’s combined radar and electro-optical/infrared sensors monitored the object for roughly twelve minutes. The contact appeared as a white sphere measuring approximately two meters across, displaying no discernible propulsion system, control surfaces, or thermal signature. Its altitude ranged between thirty thousand and thirty-five thousand feet — consistent with standard weather balloon operations — while its drift pattern aligned precisely with prevailing wind currents at those elevations.

The report specifies that tracking occurred over international waters, though it withholds the precise European region, exact date, and time of the encounter. Analysts found no evidence of anomalous acceleration, transmedium movement, or any electronic emissions emanating from the object. Based on the collected sensor data — particularly the object’s physical characteristics and passive drift behavior — intelligence personnel determined the contact was a balloon of undetermined origin.

Officials emphasized that the object presented no hazard to aviation safety. The assessment offers no speculation regarding the balloon’s purpose or launching entity, though it notes the absence of any communication signals. This resolution aligns with AARO’s broader observation that the majority of UAP reports ultimately resolve to ordinary explanations such as balloons, unmanned aerial systems, or atmospheric phenomena.

Established in 2022, the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office maintains responsibility for aggregating and evaluating UAP reports across all operational domains. The office retains the authority to pursue additional sensor data from the tracking platform’s operators, conduct interviews with involved personnel, and cross-reference this incident against other reported encounters. The PURSUE policy driving this release mandates public disclosure of UAP-related information that does not jeopardize national security interests.

While AARO continues its analysis of unresolved cases and has committed to periodic congressional reporting that may include further declassifications, the Department of War has not signaled a timeline for subsequent document releases. This disclosure forms part of an ongoing effort to balance public transparency regarding anomalous phenomena with the protection of operational security.
