PHOENIX, March 14 — By nightfall on Thursday, the desert sky above Arizona had become a stage for one of the most dramatic mass sightings in modern American history. The scene stretched for hundreds of miles.

Thousands of people across Arizona, into southern Nevada and down into Mexico, watched a series of lights move overhead. Residents describe a large, V-shaped formation crossing the sky with an eerie silence, leaving witnesses on the ground scrambling for explanations. It began in the early evening of March 13, 1997.

Reports flooded police stations and newsrooms from Phoenix to Tucson. Some witnesses spoke of a solid craft, massive in scale, blocking out stars as it passed.

Others described a cluster of lights in a sweeping arc. The U.S. Air Force later attributed some of the lights to flares dropped during a training exercise at the Barry Goldwater Range, a military testing area southwest of Phoenix. That explanation, however, did little to satisfy the thousands who saw the earlier V-shaped formation.

Many witnesses disputed the military’s account for the initial sighting. They insisted the object they saw was no flare — it was structured, silent, and moved with purpose.

The Air Force’s statement only deepened the mystery for those who had watched the lights pass directly overhead. By nightfall, the debate was already taking shape. Skeptics pointed to the flares.

Believers pointed to the scale and behavior of the formation. The official record would record the event as a mass misidentification.

But on the ground, in the desert air of that March evening, the question remains open.
