Washington, September 5 — The US Army has awarded a landmark contract to AeroVironment, a defense contractor, under the Enduring High Energy Laser program, marking the military’s first formal directed-energy program of record. This contract, valued at $464.8 million, represents a significant shift in the US military’s approach to counter unmanned aerial vehicles, or drones, and signals the Pentagon’s laser weapon era has officially arrived.

The technical reality is that laser weapons offer a cost-effective solution to the growing threat of drones, which can be mass-produced at a relatively low cost. The LOCUST X3, a modular, 30-kilowatt class laser weapon, is designed to intercept Group 1 through Group 3 drones, ranging from commercial quadcopters to tactical one-way attack UAVs.

As ever, the detail that matters is the system’s ability to silently track targets and melt through the drone’s body, motor, or onboard electronics in seconds, using high-energy, focused light beams traveling at the speed of light. A short, blunt fact is that the US Army’s laser weapon reportedly costs just $5 a shot to use, a significant reduction in cost compared to traditional kinetic explosions, which can cost millions of dollars per shot.

The contract calls for the production and rapid deployment of 26 LOCUST X3 systems over the next five years, with the systems built to withstand varying tactical scenarios by utilizing three distinct firing modes.

A Shift in Strategy

The shift to laser weapons is driven by the cost economics of modern warfare, where defenders have been forced to fire expensive interceptor missiles to shoot down mass-produced enemy drones. The US administration has recognized the need for a more cost-effective solution, and the AeroVironment contract represents a historic shift from experimental prototypes to large-scale procurement.

The modular components of the LOCUST X3 are designed to integrate easily onto standard infantry and tactical vehicles, ensuring that military personnel can service the tech directly in the field without needing external contractor support. This level of flexibility and autonomy is a significant advantage on the battlefield, where the ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances can be a decisive factor.

What’s Next

As the US military begins to deploy the LOCUST X3 systems, it will be important to watch how they perform in real-world scenarios and how they are integrated into existing military operations. The success of this program could have significant implications for the future of warfare, and it will be important to monitor the developments closely.

With the Pentagon’s laser weapon era now officially underway, the coming years will be crucial in determining the effectiveness of this new technology and its potential to revolutionize the way the US military approaches counter-drone operations.
