US Navy Unveils AIM-424 Long Range Air-to-Air Missile With 288 Mile Range

WASHINGTON, August 29 — The US Navy has unveiled the developmental AIM-424 Long Range Air-to-Air Missile, nicknamed “Malice,” designed to fit inside internal weapons bays of F-35C stealth fighters and engage enemy aircraft beyond 280 miles. The missile’s stated range exceeds 288 miles, surpassing previous Navy variants in reach, and is intended to counter advanced threats such as Chinese and Pakistani long-range air-to-air weapons. Development aligns with Pentagon efforts to close capability gaps as adversaries field increasingly long-range missiles.

The Navy emphasized the missile supports fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-generation aircraft and strengthens fleet defense and air domain overmatch. A photo released by the Navy shows the missile mounted internally on an F-35C, preserving stealth.

The system reflects a strategic push to modernize air-to-air capabilities amid evolving aerial threats. This push comes as the US administration seeks to counter growing aerial competition, with President Donald Trump’s administration prioritizing defense modernization. The AIM-424’s internal carriage on F-35Cs preserves stealth while extending engagement envelopes beyond 280 miles — a critical advantage against adversaries fielding long-range missiles.

Future testing will determine operational deployment timelines, but the missile’s development underscores a broader shift toward over-the-horizon air-to-air dominance. Its success hinges on integrating with next-generation platforms while maintaining compatibility across the joint force.

The AIM-424 represents a significant advancement in U.S. military aviation technology, reflecting a strategic response to evolving threats in the Indo-Pacific and beyond. Designed to operate at extreme ranges, the missile addresses a critical gap in long-distance air-to-air engagement capabilities, enabling U.S. forces to neutralize aerial threats before they can close within striking distance. Its development is closely tied to broader Pentagon initiatives aimed at sustaining technological and tactical superiority in contested environments, particularly as peer adversaries expand their missile arsenals with similarly long-reaching systems.

Fitted for internal carriage on the F-35C Lightning II, the AIM-424 maintains the stealth integrity of fifth-generation platforms while dramatically extending their engagement envelope. This combination allows U.S. fighters to detect, track, and engage adversaries at distances previously unattainable with legacy air-to-air weapons. The missile’s internal storage eliminates drag and radar cross-section penalties associated with external stores, preserving aerodynamic efficiency and survivability.

As such, it supports the Navy’s emphasis on integrated air and missile defense architectures that prioritize overmatch and deterrence. While specific deployment timelines remain under review, the AIM-424’s progress underscores a pivotal shift in how naval aviation approaches long-range strike and defense missions.

Its development is not isolated but part of a larger ecosystem of modernization efforts across the U.S. military, involving joint integration with next-generation platforms and command systems. Success in fielding the missile will depend on seamless coordination between weapons developers, platform designers, and operational planners to ensure compatibility and reliability in complex combat scenarios.
