Ukraine to Deploy Missile Capable of Reaching Moscow by Autumn: Significant Shift in Confl

Kyiv, October 4 — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Monday that the FP-9 ballistic missile, capable of reaching Moscow, will be ready for deployment by autumn. This development marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, potentially shifting the balance of power on the battlefield. The FP-9 is part of Ukraine’s broader effort to modernize its military capabilities with the support of Western allies, including the United States and several European nations.

The missile system is being developed in collaboration with international defense contractors and is expected to be integrated into Ukraine’s armed forces by the end of 2023. Zelenskyy emphasized during a recent address that the FP-9’s range and precision would allow Ukrainian forces to strike deep into Russian territory, potentially disrupting military logistics and command structures.

The announcement comes amid heightened tensions along the front lines, where both sides have reported increased troop movements and artillery exchanges. The development of the FP-9 has been supported by a series of defense agreements signed by Ukraine with NATO members, which have provided funding, technology transfers, and training programs. These agreements, totaling approximately $15 billion (about US$15 billion), have been aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s military infrastructure and capabilities.

The FP-9 is expected to be the first of several advanced missile systems that Ukraine plans to acquire over the next few years. The potential deployment of the FP-9 has drawn mixed reactions from international observers, with some analysts expressing concern over the escalation of hostilities, while others view it as a necessary step for Ukraine to defend its sovereignty.

The Russian government has not yet officially commented on the FP-9’s development but has reiterated its commitment to defending its interests in the region. The timeline for the FP-9’s readiness is based on current production schedules and testing phases, which are expected to be completed by the end of the third quarter of 2023. The missile system’s deployment could have significant implications for the conflict, potentially altering the strategic landscape and influencing diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis.
