FBI Releases UFO Documents from 1947 to 1968 Investigations

A declassified FBI document titled 65_HS1-834228961_62-HQ-83894_Section_6, showing investigative records on UFOs and flying discs from 1947 to 1968.

A recently released FBI document, catalogued as “65_HS1‑834228961_62‑HQ‑83894_Section_6,” adds a detailed chapter to the growing archive of United States government records on unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP). The file, part of case 62‑HQ‑83894, compiles investigative notes, eyewitness statements and public reports that span from June 1947 through July 1968. Its contents were made public on May 8 2026 by the Department of War’s PURSUE archive, continuing the administration’s pledge for greater transparency on the subject.

The dossier includes several notable elements: high‑profile incident narratives, photographs taken at locations such as Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and technical proposals that explore possible propulsion mechanisms for the observed objects. Central to the file is an August 25 memorandum addressed to D.J.

Ladell, which outlines a series of recurring phenomena reported in New Mexico. According to the memo, investigators documented “green fireballs,” disc‑shaped objects and meteoric‑like sightings near sensitive installations. The Office of Special Investigations (OSI) expressed concern over the persistence of these events.

Dr. La Paz, a meteor specialist from the University of New Mexico, is cited as concluding that the sightings did not match typical meteoric behavior. In response, OSI contracted Land‑Air Inc., based in Alamogordo, New Mexico, to conduct a scientific study of the unexplained occurrences.

For classification purposes, the FBI file groups the phenomena into three categories: The release of this file is only a portion of the larger “United States UFO files” collection referenced on Wikipedia, which aggregates declassified documents from multiple agencies. While the FBI vault hosts a partially redacted version of the file, the PURSUE release includes several newly declassified pages and only minor redactions, offering researchers a clearer view of the agency’s investigative approach. Despite the added detail, the document leaves many questions unanswered. The official summary provides limited analysis beyond the categorization of sightings and the OSI’s involvement.

Observers note that the brief nature of the memorandum and the absence of conclusive findings highlight the need for further disclosure. The Department of War has indicated that the PURSUE program will continue to issue additional releases, suggesting that more information on UAP investigations may emerge in the coming months.

As each batch of records becomes available, scholars and the public alike will be able to piece together a more comprehensive picture of how federal agencies addressed aerial anomalies during the early Cold War era. In sum, the FBI’s Section 6 of case 62‑HQ‑83894 offers a rare glimpse into the agency’s systematic documentation of UFO reports, especially those concentrated in New Mexico. The file’s publication marks a step forward in the ongoing effort to make historically classified material accessible, and it sets the stage for future revelations about the United States’ handling of unidentified aerial phenomena.
